Yazsın on Mac: setup and use

In shortHold the talk key (the right ⌥ at first), talk, then let go. The text appears where your cursor is.

The Mac app is in testing. Yazsın waits in the menu bar, next to the clock.

First launch: Open Anyway

The test version hasn't been through Apple's review yet. So the first time, your Mac shows a warning and doesn't open Yazsın.

  1. Move Yazsın to the Applications folder.
  2. Try to open Yazsın. Your Mac shows a warning. Close it.
  3. From the Apple menu, open System Settings.
  4. In the sidebar, click Privacy & Security.
  5. Scroll down. In the Security section, click Open Anyway.
  6. Your Mac asks once more. Confirm that you want to open it, and enter your Mac's password if asked.

The Open Anyway button shows for about an hour after you try to open Yazsın. You only need to do this once. After that, Yazsın opens normally.

Two permissions: Microphone and Accessibility

  • Microphone: so Yazsın can hear you. It records only when you start with the talk key, and stops when you finish.
  • Accessibility: so Yazsın can put the text where your cursor is. This also lets the talk key work in every app.
  1. In Yazsın's setup window, click Allow in the Microphone step, and allow it.
  2. In the Accessibility step, click Open System Settings.
  3. In the list that opens, turn on the switch next to Yazsın.

Without the Accessibility permission, the text goes to the clipboard. Paste it yourself with ⌘ V.

If the microphone is slow to start, which happens most with Bluetooth headphones, it stays on for about 20 seconds after you talk. Your Mac shows the orange dot meanwhile. Nothing is recorded during that time.

Talk

At first it's the right ⌥ key. While you hold it, a small capsule shows on screen.
  1. Click where you want to type.
  2. Hold the talk key and talk.
  3. When you're done, let go. The text appears where your cursor is.

Long texts: hands-free

  1. While you hold the talk key, press Space once.
  2. Let go of the keys and talk freely.
  3. When you're done, press the talk key once.

You can also finish by clicking the done mark in the capsule. Tapping the talk key twice starts hands-free too.

Cancel

Press Esc or click the ✕ in the capsule. Nothing is written.

Change the talk key

At first it's the right ⌥ (Option) key.

  1. Click the Yazsın icon in the menu bar.
  2. Click Settings….
  3. In Talk key, pick a key: Left ⌥ (Option), Right ⌥ (Option), Left ⌘ (Command), Right ⌘ (Command) or fn / 🌐.

Use the talk key together with another key and Yazsın stays out of the way. ⌘ shortcuts and characters typed with ⌥ keep working.

One exception: when the talk key is ⌥, pressing ⌥ with Space starts hands-free. If another app opens with ⌥ Space (Alfred or Raycast, for example), turn on Leave ⌥ Space to other apps in Settings.

If you pick fn / 🌐, set the 🌐 key to Do Nothing in your Mac's Keyboard settings.

Recent texts and History

Under the Yazsın icon in the menu bar there's Recent texts. Point to one to see Copy, Paste and Fix….

The Yazsın window

  1. Click the Yazsın icon in the menu bar.
  2. Click Open Yazsın.
  3. On Home, see and search your texts. Point to a text to see Copy, Fix and Delete.

This Mac keeps the texts you write on it, up to 1000.

If you don't want that, turn off Keep history on this Mac in Settings. The history saved on this Mac is then deleted, and new texts aren't saved on the Mac. Only the last 10 texts of the session stay, in memory.

Fix it, and Yazsın learns

  1. On Home, point to the text that came out wrong and click Fix.
  2. Fix the wrong word.
  3. Click Save and teach.

Yazsın learns the changed word and says Yazsın learned. If it writes that word wrong the same way again, it writes it the way you fixed it.

You'll find what it learned in My words, under Your fixes. Delete anything you don't want.

To learn, only short word pairs are kept. More: What's kept, what isn't?

Version

The Yazsın window and Fix are in Mac 0.2 and later.

Updates

Yazsın checks for new versions itself. When one is out, the menu shows New version ready, with Update at the end.

  1. Click the Yazsın icon in the menu bar.
  2. Click the New version ready line.

Yazsın installs the new version and opens again. Nothing is installed until you click.

Version

Updates came with Mac 0.1.3. Older versions don't have them.
