How to fix “No permission to enable voice typing”

1. Find out which keyboard you use

For Gboard, you'll give microphone permission to Gboard, so check which keyboard you use first.

1. Open Settings.
2. In the search bar at the top, type "keyboard".
3. Open the section where the default keyboard is chosen. On Samsung phones it's called Keyboard list and default.
4. Note the keyboard's name: Gboard, Samsung Keyboard or another one.

2. Give Gboard microphone permission

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Apps.
3. Tap Gboard. If it isn't listed, tap See all apps.
4. Tap Permissions.
5. Tap Microphone and choose Allow only while using the app.
6. Go back to the app you were typing in and tap the keyboard's microphone again.

If you use Samsung Keyboard, also make sure you accepted the permissions and terms that its selected voice input service asked for the first time you used it.

These steps follow Google's Android help. Menu names can differ a little on Samsung, Xiaomi and other phones. If you get stuck, type your keyboard's name into the Settings search bar.

3. Make sure the phone's microphone isn't switched off for everything

On recent Android versions you can turn off the microphone for all apps with one switch. If it's off, no keyboard can hear you.

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Security & privacy, then Privacy, then Privacy controls.
3. Turn on Microphone access.

That's the path Google gives for Pixel phones. On other phones, search Settings for "microphone access". The switch may also be in the quick settings panel you open by swiping down from the top of the screen. Menu names differ by phone.

4. Make sure voice typing is on in the keyboard

Voice typing can be turned off in Gboard's settings. If it's off, the microphone won't work.

1. Open any app you can type in and tap a text box.
2. Tap the settings icon at the top of Gboard. On some versions, open the menu at the top left first, tap More, then Settings.
3. Tap Voice typing and turn voice typing on.

If it happens in WhatsApp

WhatsApp's own microphone permission is for voice notes and calls. For Gboard, give microphone permission to Gboard. For Samsung Keyboard, check the permissions requested by its selected voice input service.

If you can't record voice notes either, check WhatsApp's permission the same way: Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions, Microphone.

Still not working?

• Something else may be using the microphone: a call or a recording. Finish it and try again.
• Restart your phone.
• Update your keyboard app from Google Play.

Don't factory reset your phone. It can erase everything, and it isn't needed for this.
