Turkish voice typing on iPhone and Android

Short answerYou can type Turkish by voice for free. Add the Turkish keyboard to your phone, switch to it, then tap the keyboard's microphone and speak Turkish. On iPhone and in Gboard, voice typing uses the language of the keyboard that's open, so switching to the Turkish keyboard is the step people often miss.

This page is about typing messages by talking. Turning an audio or video file into Turkish text is a different job, done by transcription tools.

On iPhone

Add the Turkish keyboard

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, Keyboard, Keyboards.
  3. Tap Add New Keyboard and choose Turkish.

Dictate in Turkish

  1. Make sure dictation is on: Settings, General, Keyboard, Enable Dictation.
  2. Tap a text box, then touch and hold the globe key and choose Türkçe.
  3. Tap the microphone on the keyboard and speak Turkish.

Punctuation: iPhone adds punctuation automatically in some languages. Apple's feature list doesn't include Turkish for this today, so say the marks in Turkish: "virgül" (comma), "nokta" (period), "soru işareti" (question mark), "yeni satır" (new line).

Apple says dictation runs on the iPhone itself in many languages, and Turkish is on its list for on-device dictation.

On Android with Gboard

Add Turkish

  1. Open any app you can type in and tap a text box.
  2. Tap the settings icon at the top of Gboard.
  3. Tap Languages, then Add keyboard.
  4. Choose Turkish, pick a layout, and tap Done.

Speak Turkish

  1. Hold the space bar and choose Turkish.
  2. Tap the microphone at the top of the keyboard.
  3. When you see the prompt to speak, talk in Turkish.

You can say "virgül" and "nokta" for punctuation. Google notes that spoken punctuation isn't available in every language.

Changing Gboard's language doesn't change your phone's language.

Turkish letters

When the Turkish keyboard is selected, voice typing writes Turkish letters: ç, ğ, ı, İ, ö, ş, ü. If you get "i" where "ı" should be, or English-looking spellings, the keyboard or voice typing language is probably still set to English.

Speaking Turkish and English together

Results can vary when you mix languages. If you mix English words into Turkish sentences, or the other way round, see: voice typing in two languages in one sentence.
